Company headquarters Kaufmann Bausysteme

As specialists in modular timber construction, 32 prefabricated timber modules were stacked to form an elongated structure for the company’s own headquarters at the entrance to Reuthe in Vorarlberg. Two stairwells provide transverse and longitudinal bracing. The ground floor, which is partly on a slope and houses a car park at the rear, is concreted. The client commissioned three architectural firms for the planning. Their challenge was to transfer the experience they had already gained with modular construction in residential and school buildings to the office building. Open timber frame modules were used to ensure the maximum flexibility required in office construction. Thanks to the high level of prefabrication, a finished building could be erected in just six months.</p

It should be clear that a building works, that it is constructed correctly in terms of craftsmanship and logically positioned in terms of spatial planning. However, it seems even more important to me that users enjoy entering it and that added value is generated for the neighbourhood. Even during the construction phase and after moving in, you notice the joy and motivation of the employees.

Three architects – one building! What a daring idea! And it’s to be a modular building – ever crazier … But: it’s incredibly fruitful and the first brainstorming session was really fun. The basis was quickly found and the client was quickly convinced: a clear, bold building structure that subtly but clearly conveys the idea of modular construction through its design. The building now stands confidently and naturally in a prominent position in the Bregenzerwald. This challenge was mastered.

Dealing with the level jump – the course of the terrain at the beginning of the development – the orientation of the office spaces – the visibility in dealing with the street – the modularity or room cell construction and how it can be optimised with a high degree of prefabrication … these were the main topics. The collaboration within the team of three architects was also exciting because it was a first for us. The planning was only possible thanks to the open and innovative attitude of the client. Working with the most innovative members of the team was a pleasure and created real added value.
